A Fugitive Of Mercy, Live 'On Air', Friday November 22nd 2013.

A Fugitive Of Mercy (Original from Boskoop), live on air.
Recorded: November 22nd 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Track: Can You Help Me?.

Note: back in 1987 I saw them perform during a festival, which forever fuelled my smouldering taste for the alternative side of music. It would change my life forever in quite a drastical way! 25 years after they split up, the complete band reunited in the studio for a great memories filled, very relaxed interview. Despite not having played their instruments for years (bass for 25 years, guitar for 20), they rehearsed prior to the show for 10 minutes and played one of their early tracks live ‘On Air’ as a one-off! Truly fond I was able to make this happen, as I originally planned to interview the singer only!

Sommerhus, 'In Session', Thursday November 21st 2013.

Sommerhus (Rotterdam), In Session.
Recorded: November 21st 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Denmark (Tk 1-2)/Only You Do/Song Of Worry/Shht.

Note: Vera and Peter Jessen – Juhrend came to the studio for a fourth chat and liveset on this Thursday night, as other commitments prevented them from appearing live, while longer delay wasn’t the thing they preferred. They were far too ewager not to come and talk about their re-incarnation ‘Sommerhus’, which came as a natural follow-up to their previous ‘Vera’ band. Recorded as a liveshow, they interrupted the great interview with 4 truly great, jazzy tracks. First track, the instrumental ‘Denmark’ broke down and was redone right away.

Petra Both , 'In Session', Saturday November 9th 2013.

Petra Both (Groenrijk), In Session.
Recorded: December 9th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Klein/Wachten/Overschot Genot (Tk 1)/Ik Brand Een Kaars (Tk 1-4)/Overschot Genot (Tk 2).

Note: as calendars couldn’t sync in favour of a live broadcast, Petra dropped by the studio for a pre-recorded show about her self-released ‘Tante Pietje’-CD, which came out earlier that year. Inbetween chunks of a very talkative and informing interview, she performed 4 tracks live, accompanied by guitarist Sander Geerdink. Dissatisfied with her first rendition of ‘Overschot Genot’, a second take was recorded after the ‘show’ was completed. Takes 1-3 of ‘Ik Brand een Kaars’, a song dedicated to Gouda, the city she lived until moving last summer, where breakdowns, edited out of the broadcast.

Ricky de Sire, Live 'On Air', Friday October 4th 2013.

Ricky de Sire (Rotterdam), live on air.
Recorded: October 4th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Vetkwabben Rollen (Poem/In Het Dove Oor/Ford Mustang Blues (Poem)/Dubbele Penetratie/Suicide Blauw.

Note: Rotterdam Cult Underground Singer/Songwriter Ricky de Sire (Eric de Boer) previewed his latest vinyl 7” ij the show with a hesitating, slow interview and some live-tracks, accompanied by Arie van Vliet (Boring Pop) and Niek Hilkman (Yoshimi!). Great and unique at the same time. But what a musician he is!

Smekmuk, Live 'On Air', Friday September 9th 2013.

Smekmuk (Gouda, Waddinxveen), live on air.
Recorded: September 9th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Supercollider (Megadeth)/Paradise/Untitled/Watching Over Me (Iced Earth)/Love & Touch & Squeezing (Journey).

Note: first radio-appearance of young, brandnew Deathmetal-trio from Gouda surroundings. Slightly unchained, but nevertheless nice and informative interview, intermingled with acoustic performances of three covers and two self-penned songs, which sounded quite convcentional pop/rock, rather than Deathmetallish.

Boring Pop, live 'On Air', friday May 24th 2013.

Boring Pop (Rotterdam), live on air.
Recorded: May 24th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Nathan’s Rotation/The Consolation Song/Ever Teens.

Note: two years after surviving the notorious ‘Pukkelpop’ disaster (which left him with a partially cracked skull after a lightpole struck him) Arie van Vliet and his band revisited the studio for a somewhat slow interview and three acoustic livetracks. All to promote the release of their 12” vinyl album earlier that year.

maandag 20 mei 2013

BluefisH, Live 'On Air' Friday May 17th 2013.

BluefisH! (Dordrecht), live on air.
Recorded: May 17th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: 2002 No More/ Gorgeous/Lonely Nights/Head Up.

Note: after their first visit in March was cancelled due to flu at the very last moment, the came in for a revenge. The three brothers and a sister strong band played live in front of two single mikes, to get the right harmonic sound. The lead singer was watching his phone with one eye constantly, as his wife was about to give birth.

Alexander McKenzie & The Underpaid, 'In Session' Thursday May 16th 2013.

Alexander McKenzie & The Underpaid (Rotterdam/Den Haag), \In Session\.
Recorded: May 16th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Alchemy/ When Did I Turn (TK 1-2)/Brother Where Art Thou (TK 1-3)/Lay Me Down (TK 1-3)/Interview.

Note: Canadian singer Lori McKenzie, relocated to Rotterdam, came to the studio for a session with her guitarist and keyboardist, who brought in acoustic guitar, dobro, Würlitzer and Indian harmonium. The session went quite relaxed, with several breakdowns and a redo of ‘Brother’. After the interview was recorded, the band and I all went to our homes again.

Marlou Koevoets, 'AGRO Sessions' Saturday May 4th 2013.

Marlou Koevoets (Stolwijk/Gouda), In Session.
Recorded: May 4th 2013, former ‘AGRO Studio.
Tracks: Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda (TK 1-5)/Silent Home (TK 1-2)/Safety Zone.

Note: asked to help out on recording demo-less acts for the new ‘Huiskamer van de Stad’ livingroom-festival, I got the keys to the deserted studio, once the heart of Gouda’s local service radio station for the hospital and elderly homes in town. Since they ceased to exist, but needed to sell the studio, it was convenient to use the studio occasionally, to keep it in working order. The second session was with Marlou Koevoets, member of the festival organization, co-supervising the sessions that day. As one of ‘her’ guitarists doubled in ‘Op Visite’, she invited her bassplayer to come as well, for a small scale acoustic set. Since Marlou has a much stronger voice, it became apparent that the studiomikes had too much pickup-leaking, so we not only switched some mikes, but moved Marlou to the hall, where she could sing without disturbance. The session was a wrap then within the hour.

Op Visite, 'AGRO Sessions' Saturday May 4th 2013.

Op Visite (Gouda), In Session.
Recorded: May 4th 2013, former ‘AGRO Studio.
Tracks: Perfect (TK 1-2)/Fields Of Gold (TK 1-2)/Zombie (TK 1-3)/I’m Sexy & I Know It.

First session was with acoustic cover-threesome ‘Op Visite’, who laid down this great session with covers of songs by Fairground Attraction, Sting and The Cranberries. Having soime time left, they were invited to have a one shot take, in which they produced a very vivid and great cover version of this already classic LMFAO track.

Raymond van Kooten, 'In Session' Friday May 3rd 2013.

Raymond van Kooten (Gouda), In Session.
Recorded: May 3rd 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Don’t Call Me Up (TK 1–3)/Sister Morphine (TK 1-2)/Backstreet Girl (TK 1-4)/Can You Hear The Music TK 1-2.

Note: as an addition to another program from the station, it’s guest asked ‘Ammocave’ singer Ray to sing a couple of acoustic cover versions of songs by Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. We started recording right after my weekly show and produced these four songs, of which in the end only the Jagger song ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ and ‘Backstreet Girl’ were used. All tracks were sung by Ray, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar.

Marlou Koevoets, Live 'On Air' Friday May 3rd 2013.

Marlou Koevoets (Stolwijk/Gouda), live on air.
Recorded: May 3rd 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Safety Zone/Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda/Silent Home/What You Changed In Me.

Note: Gouda area based band around singer Marlou, who also runs her own vocal coaching company. Whilew preparing to graduate from conservatory, she gathered her band around her, to support her in her own theatrical piece/graduation project ‘Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda’. IKnbetween the interview they performed several tracks semi-acoustic. The drummer sat outside the studio, playing his electronical drumkit. Making his own monitor mix of the instrument output and a linefeed from the studio, he accidentally caused a loop, which distorted most of the drums, alas.

Ask!, Live 'On Air' Friday April 26th 2013.

Ask! (Gouda), live on air.
Recorded: April 26th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Summertime/Better Than You/Nice Morning.

Note: Symphonic influenced Poprockband, which grabbed the attention of ‘Pinguin Radio’, the former nationwide commercial station ‘Kink FM’, now surviving as a webstation. After some personell changes, the band’s been working on a new EP, which they came to introduce this evening, while playing their first ever acoustic set inbetween.

Repherence, Live 'On Air' Friday April 19th 2013.

Repherence (Gouda), live on air.
Recorded: April 19th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Awake/We’re A Leaf/This Is War.

Note: slightrly folk-infused Alternative rockband, which kind of a sudden appeared from what seems to be nowhere. In facvt, they’d been active for the previous two years in church and on Praise meeting and just decided six months earlier to make the crossover to a lesser religious audience. Without denying or leaving their roots. They completely stunned the jury of a local talent-hunt, which not only gave them the opening slot on the ‘night-before-Queensday’event of ‘Oranjenacht’ on April 29th at the market square, but also the invite to appear this night for an introducing interview and some acoustic tracks.

The Maple Leaves, Live 'On Air' Friday April 12th 2013.

The Maple Leaves (Gouda/Amsterdam/Utrecht), live on air.
Recorded: April 12th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Almost Like Being In Love/On The Sunny Side Of The Street/Time After Time.

Note: local jazz-singer Mariëlle van Veen and her two accomplices walked into the studio for a chat and some very laid back jazzy standards, while Mariëlles boyfriend shot some videos. The relaxed, moodfull results have been put on Youtube not long after.

Ron Baggerman feat Flo den Hartog, Live 'On Air' Friday April 5th 2013.

Ron Baggerman feat Flo den Hartog (Den Haag/Gouda), live on air.
Recorded: April 5th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Memories Of Io/Venus (w/ Flo)/Jazzy Blues Improvisation.

Note: One of the world’s leading tapguitar players, came to talk about his music, his tapguitars and his (musical) passions, playing several tracks inbetween. Due to some cabling-hangups, his stereo tapguitar was plugged in mono, which didn’t spoil the party in the end. As his daughter accompanied him that evening, it was decided on the spot she could do a song as well, which became an amazingly sung jazzy rendition of this well-known ‘Shocking Blue’ song.

Drugsmokkel Live 'On Air' Friday March 29th 2013.

Drugsmokkel (Gouda/Rotterdam), live on air.
Recorded: March 29th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Only Love Me At The Bar/Made 4 R’n’R.

Note: After trying for quite a while, we finally succeeded in setting a date for an interview on the release of their second 2012 album and adventures since then. Being offered an acoustic set, I immediately agreed and the two singers appeared for a nice chat and these two semi-impromptu acoustic punkrock classics of their own write.

zaterdag 9 maart 2013

MonDeux, Live 'On Air' Friday March 8th 2013.

MonDeux (Gouda), live on air.
Recorded: March 8th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Le Micro/Qu A Donc Cést Du Meure/Hamlet.

Note: Jaap Mulder of famed Klezmerband ‘Di Gojim’ and his son Ruben, joined the show for a very informative chat on their theatreshow about Russian actor/singer Vladimir Vysotski, due to premiere two days later. Unlike regular music in the show, they played a mixture of Brel, Aznavour, Brecht and Weill-like chansons, featuring vocals, piano and soprano-sax. Amazing!

Steady New Sounds, Live 'On Air' Friday February 15th 2013.

Steady New Sounds (Middelburg/Vlissingen), live on air.
Recorded: February 15th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Would You Be Mine?/Mad Men/City.

Note: Four young men playing rocking Indiepop with a severe English style. Had toi reschedule their first appearance in the show, because they got booked for prestigious ‘Altersonic’ festival, which is part of ‘Eurosonic/Noorderslag’. In the week following the festival, they also played on national 3FM and on the mainstage of ‘Paradiso’ during the ’20 X 30’ festival, which they won. Playing their first acoustic set during the show, inbetween a relaxed, joyfull interview. Watch these guys!

Ronald Hendriksen 'Live On Air', Friday January 4th 2013.

Ronald Hendriksen (Gouda), live on air.
Recorded: January 4th 2013, ‘Gouwestad Radio Studio 2.
Tracks: Draw Me/Roxanne (Police-cover)/In Love With Love/Curly Hair/Who Says (John Mayer-cover).

Note: Young guitarist in a coverband, decided it was time to write his own John Mayer/Jack Johnson-inspired stuff. After posting some tracks on the web, he got to my attention and was invited to come for a liveset and interview. Along with bassplayer Romy West, he played three of his own songs, with two covers.
